Join us for a vibrant journey through the melodies and rhythms of the Caribbean and Spain with the interactive workshop “From Son to Flamenco: Discovering Our Musical Roots.”
This enriching series is presented by the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture and the esteemed singer Ana del Rocío. Scheduled across various historical and cultural venues, the workshop dates are as follows:
- August 25, 2024, 3:00 PM – Antiguo Asilo de Beneficencia, Headquarters of the Puerto Rico Culture Institute, Old San Juan
- August 31, 2024, 3:00 PM – Puerto Rican Music Museum in Ponce
- October 19, 2024, 3:00 PM – Mayagüez
- December 8, 2024 – Porta Coeli Religious Art Museum, San Germán.
“From Son to Flamenco” offers a hands-on exploration of the historical and cultural connections between Caribbean son and Spanish flamenco. Participants will delve into genres such as Cuban son, Puerto Rican dance, and flamenco, uncovering their mutual influences.
The workshop features live performances by guitarists and dancers, dance lessons, and a 25-minute documentary titled “From Son to Flamenco,” which includes interviews with music experts. This educational program aims to preserve and celebrate our musical heritage and promote intercultural understanding.
Ana del Rocío, known as the Flamenco Voice of Puerto Rico, is a versatile singer with over 20 years of experience. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, where she was part of the Lyric Theater, Ana has collaborated with notable artists and flamenco groups both in Puerto Rico and Spain.
Her career highlights include performances with Nydia Caro, Brenda Hopkins, Yaire, and many others.
This workshop is free of charge and sponsored by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture.
